Firetube Boilers
A firetube boiler works by passing hot flue gases through tubes (firetubes) set in the unit’s water-filled cylindrical tank. The tank’s volume of hot water and steam amounts to a large source of stored energy. As a result, this type of boiler can react very quickly to load changes.
Firetube boilers are used for heating, sterilization, laundries, food processing, co-generation, heat recycling, cleaning, and petroleum extraction,
Superior Boiler manufactures 2-pass and 3-pass dryback boilers as well as 3-pass and 4-pass wetback boilers. A dryback boiler has a rear wall that is lined with refractory, while a wetback boiler has a rear wall that is jacketed by water.
One type of dryback boiler is the Scotch marine (or horizontal) boiler. These boilers were commonly used to power steam ships and locomotives. Today you will find them wherever lots of steam and hot water is needed quickly and cost-efficiently.
Firetube boilers have a long life, provided they are maintained. Many firetube boilers in use today are well over 25 years old and are still making steam and hot water.
